Stanley Mosk Courthouse in Downtown Los Angeles is reopening. Here’s what you need to know.

Hearings at one of Los Angeles' busiest courthouses will resume on June 22, 2020.

 

The Supreme Court in Los Angeles, California is where you can:

  • Attend criminal jury trials and non-jury trials
  • Attend civil jury and non-jury trials
  • Take action against or respond to action from your landlord
  • Appear in family law court
  • Contest vehicles and traffic matters
  • Appear in small claims court
  • File and respond to protection/restraining orders
  • Attend Dependency and Delinquency arraignment/detention hearings

 

When to show up:

  • Hearings at the Stanley Mosk, Los Angeles Superior Courthouse are generally scheduled at 8:30 a.m. However, the courthouse opens at 7:30 a.m. 
  • You may want to arrive early to give yourself sufficient time to find parking around the courthouse. Be prepared to wait in line and walk to your respective courtroom location.

 

Important tips:

  • You will be required to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth at all times in the courthouse.
  • You may not be permitted to enter the courthouses unless you have a hearing scheduled or your filing is being accepted inside.
  • Maintain a distance of six feet apart 
  • It is not suggested to bring children to the courthouse with you. The Children’s Waiting Rooms remain closed until further notice.
  • The LA Court suggest to use drop boxes on the courthouse steps to file documents. Intake counters for filings will remain unavailable until further notice. Documents filed in the drop box are checked frequently and are considered filed on the same-day if received by 4:30.
  • If you would like to meet with a clerk in person, you must have a scheduled appointment in advance to receive in-person services. You may contact the clerk through phone. Call centers are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except for holidays.
  • The LA Court states that “parking is available for a fee at various parking lots surrounding the courthouse. There is limited metered street parking on Grand Ave. and Hill St.” Take cash with you as many parking locations do not accept payments by card.
  • You will pass through a metal detector upon entry.
  • You will need to pay fees associated with your appearance. 
  • You may obtain copies of your documents for Civil, Family Law, and Probate to take to court with you through the LA court’s website. You will be required to pay a fee for your copy. Criminal, Juvenile and Adoption documents are not available online.
