4 Tips To Remember When Working With A Lawyer

It is human nature to let someone else handle the more complicated things in our lives. We let financial planners handle our 401(k)’s and IRA’s, and doctors diagnose and treat our sicknesses. We also turn to lawyers for complicated legal matters that we encounter. But rather than just leaving it entirely up to lawyers to figure out the details, here are four ways to help your lawyer solve your legal problem.

Provide As Much Information (Good And Bad) As Possible. At some point you will have a consultation with your lawyer.  The consultation is the time when the lawyer can best figure out how to handle your legal matter based on the information that you provide. For this reason, providing as much information about your legal issue as possible is critical.  Even if you think the information may hurt your legal matter, you should disclose it to your attorney because it may not be bad after all.

Pay Your Legal Bill On Time. Imagine working hard on your job and then finding out that you won’t be paid on time. Not only did you expect to be paid on time, but you counted on receiving that money to pay your personal bills and expenses. Even worst, your entire approach to the job changes. You are less willing to work and probably would quit, right? You can go a long way in helping your lawyer do their job by making sure that you pay your legal bill on time.

Ask For Updates, But Don’t Be Annoying. Of course there is nothing wrong with wondering how your case is going. And there is nothing wrong with asking for updates.  In fact, you should. But legal matters often take time to resolve and asking for daily updates will only annoy your lawyer and will not be helpful to your legal matter.

Trust The Process.  Solving a legal problem is generally a marathon-like process, not a sprint. Just because something doesn’t go in your favor today doesn’t mean that your legal matter won’t be resolved in your favor in three months. Absent serious red flags that your legal matter is not going in your favor, you should trust the process and trust that your lawyer will handle your legal matter competently and effectively.
