
Going to Magistrate Court in Valdosta, Georgia? Here’s what you need to know.
The Magistrate Court in Valdosta, Georgia is where you can handle legal issues related to:
Civil Matters
The Civil Division handles monetary claims that are $15,000 or less. Any amount in excess of $15,000 should be filed in either the State or Superior Court of Lowndes County. Actions filed in the Magistrate Court include, but are not limited to:
- Contract disputes
- Dispossessory actions (evictions)
- Personal injury
- Suits on account
Criminal Matters
The Criminal Division handles the issuing of arrest warrants for Lowndes County after probable cause has been determined. The Magistrate Court also conducts:
- Bond hearings
- First appearances
- Ordinance hearings
- Preliminary hearings
When to show up:
- As of March 25, 2020 the Magistrate Court will be open for business by appointment only until further notice.
- The court is accepting Statement of Claims and Dispossessorys via e-filing as alternate means of filing.
- You may schedule an appointment at 229-671-2610.
Important tips:
- The Coronavirus crisis has drastically altered court hours and cases.
- The Court will begin hearing cases that are allowed under the latest Judicial State of Emergency Order signed by Justice Harold Melton on May 11, 2020.
- If you feel sick, are running a fever, or if you have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus, please do not come to the courthouse. Contact the court by calling 229-671-2610 and request continuance.
- Everyone will be asked a series of questions regarding their health prior to entering the courtroom. Please allow extra time for this to be completed.
- Participants are encouraged to only bring those persons necessary to conduct any court proceedings.
- All parties and witnesses shall wear masks while in the courtroom.
- Only one case will be schedule and heard per time period.
- You will pass through a metal detector upon entry.
