Say No To Individualism: 5 Reasons Outsourcing Can Help You Grow Your Law Practice

First used by President Herbert Hoover in the 1920s, the term rugged individualism has taken on many meanings over the years. For solo attorneys, it means taking pride in doing things yourself and not having to rely on others to grow your practice.

While admirable and probably necessary if you are just starting your law firm, it is not prudent when you are trying to grow your law firm. Here are five reasons why outsourcing to others can be beneficial to the growth of your law practice.

You can’t do everything. Think about the most successful people that you know. Presidents have administrations filled with cabinet members. Big law firms have associates, paralegals, and secretaries. This isn’t by accident. It is because one person can’t do it all.

Imagine the daunting task of representing your clients, doing your firm’s accounting and bookkeeping, marketing for new clients, fixing broken copier machines, answering the phone, calendaring your meetings, cleaning up after the meetings, going to court or doing legal research and preparing motions, contracts, or pleadings, and then trying to have a life outside of work while growing your law practice. Initially, you may have to take on many tasks, but imagine doing this for more than a few years.

Since you can’t do everything, outsourcing must become your friend.

You don’t want to do everything. You were trained to be a lawyer. You are great at interpreting case law and applying it to your client’s case. You are excellent at drafting and arguing motions. You are superb at crafting litigation-proof contracts. You are on your A-game in trial. Your clients love you for that. So why on earth would you want to take time away from doing what makes you great in the eyes of your clients to do accounting, bookkeeping, and other jobs that you are not great at?

When you really think about, you don’t want to do everything because you will spread yourself too thin and will not be able to grow your law practice. Outsourcing solves the problem of trying to do everything and therefore spreading yourself too thin.

Others can do the job better. Accountants do accounting. Marketers do marketing. Lawyers do law. To grow your law practice, there must be an acknowledgment that there are others that can do certain jobs better than you, and then you must find them and outsource the work to them.

You are a business. If you think of yourself as a business rather than as an individual, then you will think in terms of systems that can be run by qualified people. Even our bodies are made up of systems that work together to allow us to function every day. If these systems were not in place, we could not function or grow and would eventually shut down. Similarly, if your law practice doesn’t have systems in place, it will not function or grow and will eventually shut down.

You need time to think. As the leader of your law practice, you need time to think about ways to grow your law practice. Outside of providing a great service to your existing clients and getting new clients, actively thinking about ways to grow your law practice is arguably the next most important thing that you can do. How much time will you have to think if you are doing everything for your law practice? By the time you are finished for the day, you will be too exhausted to think. Outsourcing is about leveraging money in exchange for other people’s time who are qualified to do the job, which gives you more time to think and then execute on your thoughts.

Every day we hear from clients that tell us about the great work that you do for them. And while having an individualist spirit and resolve can help you in the beginning of your law practice, it can hinder you when growing your law practice. The bottom line is that your law firm’s growth benefits all, especially the clients who glowingly praise you for your great work.
