In 2020, the CDC’s eviction moratorium may have curbed the most severe housing crisis in the United States’ history. Amidst the coronavirus crisis, an estimated 30-40 million Americans were at risk of getting evicted.
 

However, that moratorium has expired nearly everywhere. Some major cities, like L.A., still have COVID-19 moratoriums in place.

But such cities are exceptions. Courts were backlogged when dealing with eviction cases. But they're finally catching up.

That means more people are at risk for inflation, especially those of us dealing with the increasing costs of food, gas and well...just about everything else.

According to the Real Deal, evictions were well above normal in November. 8 million people said they were at least one month behind in rent. "Nearly 4.5 million survey respondents also said that their monthly rent had increased between $250 and $500 in the past year, and 2.5 million said their rent had increased more than $500," the web site states. 

If you’re currently behind on your rent, try talking to your landlord first. But if that doesn't work, you'll need to start filling out some paperwork to slow down the eviction process.

How to Avoid Getting Evicted in 2023

Facing eviction is one of the most unsettling feelings. Not only could you potentially get thrown out of your home, but you may struggle to find any housing, too. But don't just cave in and leave when you get an eviction notice on the door.

Reach out to your landlord and explain your situation. Try to work out a payment plan. Remind your landlord that a good tenant is hard to find, especially during winter months.

But here's the problem. Studies have shown that over 90 percent of landlords had lawyers and over 90 percent of tenants did not.

So while you may have all the proper paperwork, you'll be walking into court without a lawyer. Your landlord will likely have one. 

So although you are smart, unless you've been to law school, the cards are stacked against you. 

Another study showed that when a tenant has a lawyer on their side in eviction court, they win 90% of the time.
